Lions late push falls short versus Tusculum

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's soccer team (0-4, 0-4 SAC) was defeated by Tusculum (2-1-1, 2-0-1) by a score of 2-0 Thursday evening inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Lions had two goals taken back on offside calls less than a minute apart with just over 19 minutes remaining. The goals would have knotted the contest at two. A physical contest down the stretch saw the Pioneers outlast the Lions.
Tusculum struck twice in the first half. In the 11th minute, Tina Haig netted her third of the season. In the 41st minute, Kenzie Ellenburg doubled the Tusculum advantage heading into the half.
Tusculum outshot the Lions 12-7, despite the Lions having a 6-5 advantage in second. Sanne Martinsen led all players with four shots on the night. Amanda Waskiewicz and Danielle Kandle each recorded one.
Brianna Garcia led the Pioneers with four shots. Kaitlyn Wilson and Chelsea Sheerin picked up assists on the evening.
Cece Mortensen made six saves for the shutout. Sarah Paiva made five in the losing effort.
The Lions travel to Lincoln Memorial on Thursday, March 25. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
