Eagles escape Mars Hill with OT win in season finale

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (0-6, 0-6 SAC) concluded the 2021 spring season Thursday evening, falling to Carson-Newman (4-2, 4-2 SAC), 2-1, in overtime.
After a scoreless first half, Sanne Martinsen scored her second of the season to put the Lions up 1-0 in the 53rd minute. Along the goal line and falling, Martinsen swung a shot inside the right far post, past Hope Doyle.
Emilee Futrell tied the game in the 62nd minute sliding the ball past Sarah Paiva. Futrell struck again in overtime, heading home a crossing pass from Molly Bukiewicz to secure the win.
The Eagles outshot Mars Hill 21-3. Futrell led all players with 11 shot attempts, seven on goal. Martinsen, Julia Luna, and Elida Taylor each recorded one shot.
Doyle picked up the win while Paiva made 10 saves, establishing a new career-high.
