Eagles' potent offense takes down Mars Hill

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (0-2, 0-2 SAC) was defeated 6-0 versus Carson-Newman (1-1, 1-0 SAC) Thursday evening on the road.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the 10th minute as Makayla Garner put away her first of the game and season off of a rebound. In the 36th minute, Lira Mathes netted her first on the year off of a header booted in by Marta De Zanger.
Four minutes later, Mathes tapped in a pass from Molly Bukiewicz to extend their lead to three before the end of the half. In the final moments of the first stanza, Sanne Martinsen attempted the Lions' only shot of the half.
Carson-Newman added three more goals in the second, including Garner's second of the game less than a minute into the half. Following Savannah Fields' tally in the 53rd minute, De Zanger scored her first of the year with just over four minutes remaining.
Martinsen and Amanda Waskiewicz launched a combined three shots in the second half with Lilly Ebner making two saves followed by Hope Doyle's one. Sarah Paiva made five saves in the loss.
The Eagles outshot the Lions 23-4 to pick up their first win of the season.
The Lions host Lincoln Memorial in their 2021 home opener on Thursday, March 11 inside Meares Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
