Lions open outdoor season at L-R Bears Opener
The Mars Hill women's outdoor track & field team traveled to Hickory, N.C. on Saturday to compete in the L-R Bears Open hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University. Fourteen collegiate programs from all NCAA divisions competed in the meet.
HICKORY, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's outdoor track & field team traveled to Hickory, N.C. on Saturday to compete in the L-R Bears Open hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University. Fourteen collegiate programs from all NCAA divisions competed in the meet.
Saturday marked the first meet of the outdoor season. Several established new personal bests in their respective events.
"Athletes from all of our event groups competed hard and established a great start for themselves in our outdoor opener," said head coach Richard Clarke.
Highlights from the day:
Sprint/Hurdle Crew
Simone Giggetts established a collegiate best 15.57s in the women's 100m Hurdles. Giggetts placed third overall. Giggetts competed in the 200m sprint as well, placing 29th overall with a time of 28.05s.
Makayla Rogers established a personal best 16.15s in the women's 100m Hurdles. Rogers placed fifth overall.
Honney Willis competed in the 100m, placing 30th overall with a time of 13.96s.
Maria Orozco participated in her first ever track meet. Orozco competed in the women's 100m, placing 25th overall with a time of 14.48s.
Distance Squad
Lindsey Jenkins competed in the women's 800m and 1500m run. Jenkins placed seventh overall in the 800m with a time of 2:32.98 and 20th overall in the 1500m with a time of 5:14.52.
Brenna Hicks established a personal best in the 800m run with a time of 2:57.99. Hicks placed 16th overall. Hicks competed in the 1500m run for the first time in her career. Hicks placed 24th overall with a time of 6:16.29.
Sarah McNeil competed in both the 800m and 1500m run. McNeil placed 15th overall in the 800m with a time of 2:55.28. In her first ever 1500m run McNeil placed 31st with a time of 6:02.97.
Jumps Squad
Makayla Rogers established a big personal best jump of 5.32m (17' 5.5") in women's long jump. Rogers placed seventh overall.
Mykayla King established a personal best in pole vault, tying for ninth overall with a vault of 2.93m (9' 7.25"). King competed in long jump as well, establishing a personal best 4.74m (15' 6.75m). King placed 16th overall.
Haley Eddinger established a new personal best in pole vault – 2.93m (9' 7.25"). Eddinger tied with King for ninth overall. Eddinger placed 17th in long jump with a mark of 4.5m.
Maya Adams set a collegiate best in long jump, placing 18th overall with a jump of 4.44m.
Throws Squad
Alina Mueller competed in women's javelin, earning a trip to the finals with a throw of 30.45m. That remained her farthest on the day and earned her a third place finish overall.
MyKayla King took to the javelin runway, earning a trip to the finals with a throw of 29.61m. King placed fourth overall with her mark of 29.61m.
La'Miya Blake competed in javelin for the first time in her collegiate career. Blake earned a trip to the finals with a throw of 24.00m. Blake placed eighth overall with a throw of 25.10m.
Maya Adams established a new personal best in javelin with a throw of 21.08m. Adams placed 11th overall.
Makayla Rogers placed 15th in shot put with a throw of 9.53m.
Bailey Beeman competed in both shot put and discus. Beeman placed 16th in shot put with a throw of 9.03m and 15th in discus with a throw of 24.57m.
Kayla Rice competed in her first ever collegiate track meet. Rice took to the ring in both shot put and discus. Rice placed 23rd in shot put with a throw of 16.24m and 18th in discus with a throw of 16.24m.
Next up, the Lions travel a short distance to Montreat College to compete in the Montreat Invitational on March 22nd and 23rd.
