SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (0-1) opened their 2021-22 season at the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge, falling to Converse (1-0) by a score of 93-82.
A tight contest for the majority of the first half, Converse began to pull away with just under six minutes to play. Up 27-23, the Valkyries would go on an 11-3 run to build a double-digit lead with 1:32 to play in the half. Mars Hill responded with a 6-0 run to narrow the gap entering the half.
Mars Hill continued the momentum, opening the second on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 38 less than two minutes in. Converse, trailing 44-42 with under 16 to play, reeled off nine straight points to take the 51-44 lead. They would not relinquish the lead, despite a late charge by the Lions, closing the game to within four points.
The Valkyries shot 47 percent from the floor to the Lions' 39. Mars Hill hit 10 three-pointers on the night, hitting nearly 28 percent from beyond the arc. Lions pulled down a game-high 52 rebounds to Converse's 40.
