MARS HILL, N.C.-- Mars Hill's women's basketball team recently spent time volunteering at Beacon of Hope in nearby Marshall.
The team split into two groups. One half of the team color-coordinated, organized and priced clothing. The remaining half worked in the pantry area stocking shelves with food.
"Volunteering at Beacon of Hope was an eye-opening experience," said senior Autumn Ward. "It's important to not take things for granted. It was also nice to help out an organization that supports so many in the community we live in."
Beacon of Hope is a non-profit charitable organization that reaches out to residents of Madison County to provide food, clothing, furniture and other household necessities.
"Volunteering with my team makes me realize how much we can make a difference, and every little bit helps," said junior Katie Stevens. "It was definitely a positive experience not only for me, but my teammates and coaches as well."
Mars Hill opens their season Nov. 13 at Lees-McRae. The Lions' home-opener will be Nov. 16 against Pfeiffer.
