Cavaliers survive Lions' fourth quarter push

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-17, 0-13 SAC) pushed hard down the stretch, ultimately falling to UVa-Wise (9-10, 5-8 SAC) by a score of 62-57 Wednesday evening.
The first quarter saw the Cavaliers emerge with a 13-10 advantage with Leah Kestner leading all players, scoring five points. Gabby Gianikos led the Lions with four, hitting both field goal attempts in just 3:03 of the first. Both Alexis Pardue and Drew McMillan added three points apiece.
Kalee Johnson netted seven points in the second quarter to lead all players. The Cavaliers carried a nine-point advantage following a 16-10 outing in the second. Both teams were more fruitful from beyond the arc, both hitting two apiece in the frame. Selby Baughman paced the Lions' offense with four points.
It was a tale of two quarters in the second half with the Cavaliers outscoring the Lions in the third, 23-15 with Caitlyn Ross netting 12 of her game-high 14 points in the frame. Mars Hill responded with a dominant performance in the fourth, outscoring UVa-Wise 22-10 and pulling with one on two separate occasions late in the contest. Baughman scored seven of her 11 points in the frame. Tatum Boggs exploded for nine points, but clutch free throws from the Cavaliers in the final minute of play clinched the victory.
Boggs led the Lions with 13 followed by Baughman's 11 points. Both Pardue and De'Ja Marshall led all players with nine rebounds apiece.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, February 1 at 2 p.m. when they take on the Cobras of Coker University.
