MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (0-3-1) was defeated by a score of 1-0 versus non-conference foe Palm Beach Atlantic (2-1-0) Sunday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Lions pushed the play in the opening 20 minutes, controlling the ball in the offensive zone until a lapse defensively in the 21st minute allowed the Sailfish's Karina Williams to give Palm Beach Atlantic the 1-0 lead. From 20+ yards out, Williams lofted a ball high over the head of the Mars Hill goalkeeper to score her first of the season.
Mars Hill entered the second half trailing by one, but had several opportunities in the final 45 minutes to tie the game. Sanne Martinsen led the team with five shots on the afternoon, including three in the second half. Her final attempt with 3:11 remaining in the contest was the Lions' best scoring chance.
A free kick taken by Audrey Scoggins was received by Samantha Pyle. Pyle then flipped a no-look back pass to the open Martinsen from five yards out. Martinsen's attempt sailed high over the crossbar.
Williams led the Sailfish with four shots on the afternoon while their goalkeeper, Madison Chiola, made one save for their second win of the season. Clare Witt made four stops on the day.
