Saint Leo Rallies to Defeat Lions
Cassie Boggs’ fifth-inning double plated the winning run as Saint Leo defeated Mars Hill 2-1 in softball action on Sunday afternoon.
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Cassie Boggs' fifth-inning double plated the winning run as Saint Leo defeated Mars Hill 2-1 in softball action on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's game was the second consecutive contest between the two teams, as Saint Leo won an 8-7, extra-inning contest on Saturday at the Armstrong tournament. With the loss, Mars Hill falls to 4-3.
The Lions got on the board in the second inning as Jamie Booze reached on a two out walk, followed by a Shaundee Woosley single. Taylor Burkhalter singled to score Booze, giving Mars Hill a 1-0 lead. Saint Leo tied the game in the fourth inning on a Michelle George single. In the Saint Leo fifth, Adriana Sanders reached on a leadoff walk, followed by a Sarah Steiner double. Boggs doubled to left-center, scoring Sanders.
Mars Hill had a chance to tie the game in the fifth inning after Burkhalter led off the frame with a triple. Following a strikeout, Burkhalter was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice. Mars Hill got consecutive singles from Cori Dew and Robyn Stanek to load the bases, but a Jamie Hockaday flyout ended the threat. A double play ended a Mars Hill opportunity in the sixth before Saint Leo retired the side in order in the seventh to end the game.
Burkhalter went two-for-three with an RBI to lead the Lion offense. Dew, Stanek, Hockaday and Woosley each had a hit in the contest.
Steiner earned the win for Saint Leo, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings. Tyler Miles is the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout in 4.1 innings of work. Culler threw 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing a hit while issuing one walk.
