Tusculum Sweeps Lions
The Mars Hill softball team was swept by Tusculum on Tuesday evening at J.C. “Red” Edmonds Field, dropping the first game 5-3 and losing 3-2 in the second.

Game 1: Tusculum 5, Mars Hill 3
Alix Kruel's three-run triple in the fourth inning gave the Pioneers a 5-3 advantage they wouldn't relinquish in a game one victory.
Brittany Gibson led off the second inning with a double and advanced to third on a Pioneer error that allowed Jamie Booze to reach. After back-to-back strikeouts, reigning SAC Player of the Week Shaundee Woosley doubled to give Mars Hill a 2-0 lead.
Tusculum tied the game at 2 in the third inning on a Carolyn Williamson two-run single after the Lions committed two errors.
Mars Hill took the lead in the fourth on Woosley's second double of the game that plated Shelby Culler. Culler reached on a one-out double.
In the home half of the frame, Katie Brennan reached via a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a groundout. After Courtney Hutcherson was hit by a pitch and a Nicole Ball single, Kruel tripled to give the Pioneers a 5-3 lead.
Woosley went two-for-three with two doubles and three RBIs. Culler went two-for-three with a single, double and run scored. Robyn Stanek was one-for-four with a double, extending her hitting streak to 17 games. Jamie Hockaday went one-for-three with a double. Aleshia Peek and Brittany Gibson each went one-for-three.
Kelly King earned her 16th win of the season, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in seven innings. Culler took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts in six innings.
Game 2: Tusculum 3, Mars Hill 2
Alix Kruel's two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning propelled Tusculum to a doubleheader sweep.
Tusculum pushed a run across in the fourth inning after Miranda Beeler led off with a single and scored on a Tavi Parris groundout.
Mars Hill took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Shaundee Woosley reached on a two-out walk and scored on Cori Dew's fifth home run of the season.
Parris led off the sixth inning with a single and advanced to second on a Mars Hill error. After a groundout advanced the runners, Jamie Booze struck out Paige Sneed. Kruel followed with a two-out base hit up the middle to score the tying and go-ahead runs.
Jamie Hockaday went three-for-three with three singles. Dew went one-for-four with a home run and two RBIs. Robyn Stanek went one-for-four with a single, while Aleshia Peek went one-for-two with a single and a walk.
Eliza Davis earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings. Booze took the tough loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in six innings.
Mars Hill plays their final non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, traveling to UVa-Wise. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
