Hockaday Named First Team All-America
Mars Hill senior second baseman Jamie Hockaday has been named to the 2014 Daktronics All-America Softball First team, officials announced on Wednesday. Hockaday is the second player in programl history to earn first team honors.
MARS HILL, N.C. - Mars Hill senior second baseman Jamie Hockaday has been named to the 2014 Daktronics All-America Softball First team, officials announced on Wednesday. Hockaday is the second player in program history to earn first team honors, joining Natalie Haithcox in 2008.
Hockaday holds the highest batting average among first team members with a .466 average, which is 12th in NCAA Division II. Hockday ranks among the top ten in on-base percentage at .556. She is the only South Atlantic Conference player on the first team and one of three SAC players to earn All-America honors (Molly Child/Anderson-2nd team, Kelli Hensley/Carson-Newman-3rd team).
The All-America selection is the crowning achievement on a 2014 season that saw Hockaday lead the South Atlantic Conference in RBI (59), on-base percentage and slugging percentage (.737). In addition, Hockaday set the Mars Hill season record with 30 walks as well as on-base percentage and ranks among the top five in career batting average (.466-2nd), RBI (59-2nd) and slugging percentage (.737-3rd).
Hockaday is joined on the first team by pitchers Kayla Cox (University of Tampa), Morgan Foley (University of Indianapolis) and Emily Estep (Shippensburg University), catcher Ali Dzierzynski (LIU Post), first baseman Kendra Sancet (Texas Women's University), third baseman Miranda Cleary (Grand Valley State), shortstop Alexis Mercer (Armstrong Atlantic State), outfielders Courtney Brown (Valdosta State), Tiffany Brown (Pittsburg State) and Renee Erwin (West Texas A&M), designated player McKenzie Rynard (Pittsburg State), utility Darian Dunn (San Angelo State) and utility-pitcher Ally Foster (Bellarmine). Players who were named to their All-Region first team were eligible for the All-America ballot.
Foley was named the "Ron Lenz Pitcher of the Year", while Erwin was named the "Ron Lenz Player of the Year".
