Stanek Hits Two Grand Slams in Split at Coker
Junior third baseman Robyn Stanek hit two grand slams in a doubleheader split with Coker at Saleeby-Stokes Field on Sunday. Mars Hill won the first game 14-0 in five innings before dropping the second game 15-14 in eight innings.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Junior third baseman Robyn Stanek hit two grand slams in a doubleheader split with Coker at Saleeby-Stokes Field on Sunday. Mars Hill won the first game 14-0 in five innings before dropping the second game 15-14 in eight innings. The Lions are 15-13 overall and 3-7 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Game 1: Mars Hill 14, Coker 0 (5 Innings)
Taylor Hussey fired a two-hit shutout while the Mars Hill offense used a five-run third inning and seven-run fifth inning that included Stanek's second collegiate grand slam.
Erin Vickery put Mars Hill on the board in the second inning with her fifth home run of the season, a solo blast with two outs. The Lions scored five runs in the third inning. Shaundee Woosley led off the frame with a walk, followed by a lineout and a Coker error that allowed Robyn Stanek to reach. Aleshia Peek followed Stanek with a three-run home run to give Mars Hill a 4-0 lead. Jamie Booze followed Peek's home run with a walk and advanced to second on a Brittany Gibson base hit. Vickery singled to bring home Booze, chasing Coker starting pitcher Lauren Phillips. Kyara Porche reached on a single, scoring Vickery for a 6-0 Lion lead.
Mars Hill added a run in the fourth thanks to some help from Coker. Jamie Hockaday reached on a two-out single and advanced to second on a Peek base hit. Hockaday and Peek moved up a base on a wild pitch, with Hockaday scoring on a passed ball.
In the fifth inning, Gibson led off with a single and swiped her team-leading 11th base before walks to Vickery and Porche loaded the bases. Woosley reached on the third consecutive walk of the inning to score Gibson. After a fielder's choice that retired pinch-runner Lauren Saller at the plate, Stanek hit a grand slam to left field for a 12-0 Lion advantage. Gibson hit her second single of the inning to bring home Peek, with a Coker error allowing Booze to score for the final run of the inning.
Gibson went three-for-four with three singles, two runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Vickery was two-for-two with a single, home run, run scored and an RBI. Peek went two-for-four with a single, home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Stanek was one-for-three with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Porche went one-for-three with a single, run scored and RBI.
Hussey earned her sixth win of the season, scattering two hits over five innings with two walks and a strikeout. Phillips took the loss after she allowed six runs, one earned, on four hits with three walks in 2.2 innings of work. Coker committed four errors in the contest.
Game 2: Coker 15, Mars Hill 14 (8 Innings)
Mars Hill scored five runs in the seventh inning to force extra innings, but Coker plated four runs in the eighth for a 15-14 win.
After a scoreless first inning, Mars Hill began the second inning with back-to-back walks to Aleshia Peek and Jamie Booze. Following a strikeout, Erin Vickery reached on a fielder's choice that retired Peek at third base. Lauren Saller singled to left, scoring Booze for a 1-0 Lion lead.
Coker answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a trio of singles and a sacrifice fly.
Mars Hill tied the game at four in the fourth inning. Following a groundout to begin the inning, Booze reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a Brittany Gibson single. Vickery doubled down the right field line to score Booze and Gibson. Saller hit her second single in as many at-bats, plating Vickery to even the score.
Coker took the lead for good in the home half of the fourth as Sydney Weatherford led off with a double and scored on a Tayler Barcomb base hit. Barcomb would later score on a wild pitch for a 6-4 lead. The Cobras added two runs in the fifth after Logan Cox led off with a double and scored on a Tyresha Ellis double. Ellis scored on a bases-loaded walk to Ashley Gallman.
Mars Hill plated two runs in the sixth inning thanks to a Coker error and a wild pitch to pull within two runs. Coker scored three runs on RBI singles by Ellis and Katelyn Szupello and a Weatherford RBI double to take an 11-6 lead to the seventh.
After a flyout to begin the seventh, Brittany Gibson was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on Saller's third RBI single of the game. Shaundee Woosley singled and Cori Dew was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stanek tied the game with her second grand slam of the game, fouling off seven pitches before her big blast. Coker didn't score in the home half of the seventh, sending the game to extras.
The Lions scored three runs in the top of the eighth for a 14-11 lead. A Coker error allowed Kyara Porche to score from second to give Mars Hill their first lead since the second inning. Booze doubled to bring home Peek, with Gibson and Vickery reaching on Coker errors that allowed Booze to score.
After the Intentional Tiebreaker runner and two walks loaded the bases for Coker, Ellis singled to bring home Corrinne Stiles, with a Weatherford two-run single evening the game at 11. Szupello reached on a fielder's choice that moved pinch runner Carylann Geddes and Weatherford up a base before a four-pitch walk to Barcomb allowed Geddes to score the winning run.
Saller went four-for-five with four singles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Booze went two-for-three with a single, double, three runs scored and an RBI. Vickery went one-for-five with a double, run scored and three RBIs. Stanek went two-for-five with a single, home run and four RBIs. Woosley went two-for-six with two singles and a run scored.
Lauren Phillips earned the win, allowing ten runs, four earned on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Allie Carrigan took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits with four walks and a strikeout in 1.1 innings.
Mars Hill travels to Lees-McRae on Wednesday for the first time since 2003 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
