Mars Hill Sweeps Milligan
The Mars Hill softball team took a pair of games from Milligan College on Tuesday afternoon, earning a 4-3 win in game one and a 3-0 win in game two.
MILLIGAN, TENN. – The Mars Hill softball team took a pair of games from Milligan College on Tuesday afternoon, earning a 4-3 win in game one and a 3-0 win in game two.
Game 1: Mars Hill 4, Milligan 3
A three-run third inning proved to be the difference as Mars Hill held off Milligan for a game one victory.
Mars Hill got on the board in the second inning as Aleshia Peek led off with a double and scored on a Shelby Culler single. Milligan tied the score at 1 in the home half of the inning as Chelsey Weaver scored on a Maleah Wolfenbarger sacrifice fly.
Mars Hill retook the lead with a three-run third inning Jamie Hockaday hit a solo home run, her first of the season, with one out in the third inning. After Peek's second straight double, Jamie Booze homered to left field for a 4-1 Lion advantage.
Milligan loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Kimberly Robinson singled to left, scoring Chelsey Weaver. Peek fired home and the Lions were able to trap Amanda Dunaway in a rundown between third base and home, before catching Robinson trying to advance to second with Booze applying the tag on her to end the inning.
Milligan didn't go quietly in the seventh, as Kim Robinson led off with a homer to center field. After a groundout, Krista Lambdin doubled to right field. Culler got Jessica Connatser to pop out and struck out Kacie Skeen to end the game.
Shaundee Woosley went three-for-four with three singles. Peek went two-for-four with two doubles, two runs scores and two RBIs. Booze went two-for-two with a home run, single, run scored and two RBIs. Culler went one-for-two with an RBI.
Taylor Hussey picked up her third win of the season, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Shelby Culler earned her first save of the season, allowing one run on three this with a walk and two strikeouts. Jessica Goodson was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Game 2: Mars Hill 3, Milligan 0
Jamie Booze scattered three hits in six innings and got some timely putouts as the Lions completed the sweep with a 3-0 shutout, their first of the season.
Mars Hill started the game with two straight singles and had the bases loaded with two outs, but Buffaloes starter Chancli Connatser got out of the inning unscathed. Connatser also got out of a jam in the second inning, stranding runners at first and second.
The Lions pushed two runs across in the third. Jamie Hockaday reached on a one-out walk and advanced to second on a Cori Dew single. Aleshia Peek hit her third double of the day to bring home Hockaday, with Dew scoring on a Jamie Booze groundout.
In the Buffaloes' third, Jessica Wheelock reached on an error with one out, followed by a Krista Lambdin single. Mars Hill retired Wheelock on a fielder's choice before Kacie Skeen walked to load the bases. Booze got out of the inning with a groundout.
Taylor Hussey provided an insurance run for Mars Hill with her first hit of the season, leading off the sixth inning with a home run to left-center field.
Brittany Gibson went three-for-four with three singles. Shaundee Woosley, Lauren Saller, Hussey, Peek Hockaday, Dew and Booze each had a hit. Peek, Booze and Hussey each drove in a run.
Booze allowed three hits over six innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Allie Carrigan pitched a scoreless seventh for her first save of the season, issuing one walk. Connatser was charged with the loss after she allowed three runs on nine hits with four walks in six innings.
Mars Hill hits the road over the weekend, traveling to Francis Marion on Saturday and Saint Andrews on Sunday.
