Softball Sweeps Newberry on Senior Day
The Mars Hill softball team finished the 2014 campaign with a sweep of Newberry on Friday, defeating the Wolves 15-7 in game one and 12-4 in game two.
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Mars Hill softball team finished the 2014 campaign with a sweep of Newberry, defeating the Wolves 15-7 in game one and 12-4 in game two. Mars Hill finishes the season with a 24-20 overall record and an 8-14 mark in the South Atlantic Conference.
Game 1: Mars Hill 15, Newberry 7 (5 innings)
Jamie Hockaday became the 16th player in program history to drive in five runs in a game as the Lions used a seven-run second inning to take control of the contest.
After Newberry stranded a runner in the first, Shaundee Woosley led off with a walk and scored on a Cori Dew double down the right field line, with Dew advancing to third on the throw. Dew would score on a Jamie Hockaday sacrifice fly.
The Lions scored seven runs in the second inning, sending 12 to the plate. Brittany Gibson reached on an error and scored on a Shaundee Woosley single. Newberry starter Madison Burnett walked the next two batters followed by an Aleshia Peek single to score Cori Dew. Shelby Culler brought home the final two runs of the inning on a single to left field.
Newberry got on the board in the third inning with a Darrian Jamison three-run home run to pull within six. Mars Hill plated three runs in the home half of the inning on a Lauren Saller leadoff home run and a Jamie Hockaday two-run double.
In the Newberry fourth, Danielle Basch led off with a home run, with two more scoring on a Casey Nellums double. Mars Hill plated three runs with two outs via a Shaundee Woosley single and a Jamie Hockaday two-run double.
Newberry added a run in the fifth inning on an Ashlen Ayres single before a groundout ended the game.
Hockaday went two-for-two with two doubles and five RBIs. Dew went three-for-three with a two singles, a double, four runs scored and an RBI. Woosley went two-for-three with two singles, three runs scored and two RBIs. Culler went one-for-one with a single and two RBIs. Saller went one-for-three with a home run and RBI. Peek went one-for-three with a single and two RBIs.
Jamie Booze earned her team-leading ninth win of the season, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with three walks and 2.2 innings of work. Madison Burnett took the loss, allowing eight runs, two earned, with four walks in 1.2 innings.
Game 2: Mars Hill 12, Newberry 4 (5 innings)
Cori Dew's three-run home run in the second inning erased a 4-2 deficit as the Lions completed the sweep of the Wolves.
Newberry plated four runs in the first inning, with two coming on a Leah Hosking double, a sacrifice fly and a groundout.
Mars Hill got on the board in the first inning as Shaundee Woosley led off with a single and scored on a Jamie Hockaday single.
Brittany Gibson led off the second inning with a double and scored on an Erin Vickery single. Following a fielder's choice that retired Vickery, Shaundee Woosley reached on a single to center field. Dew delivered with her fifth home run of the season, a three-run blast that put Mars Hill ahead for good.
The Lions added a run in the third inning on a Jamie Booze single that plated Gibson.
Woosley led off the fourth inning with a double and advanced to third on a Cori Dew single. Following a walk to Robyn Stanek, Woosley and Dew scored on a Newberry error. A Gibson sacrifice fly scored Stanek, giving Mars Hill a 9-4 lead.
In the Mars Hill fifth, Lauren Saller reached on an error with one out and scored on a Robyn Stanek single. Hockaday made a final at-bat one to remember, ripping a double off of the top of the wall in left field that scored Stanek and Dew to end the ballgame.
Woosley went three-for-four with two singles and a double. Dew went two-for-three with a single, home run, three runs scored and three RBIs. Hockaday went two-for-three with a single, double and three RBIs. Gibson went one-for-two with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Stanek went one-for-two with a single, RBI and two runs scored. Vickery went one-for-two with a single and RBI. Booze went one-for-three with a single and RBI.
Tyler Miles earned her third win of the season, striking out two in four perfect innings of relief. Brittany Middleton took the loss, allowing 12 runs, six earned, on 11 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Seniors Megan Arrington, Allie Carrigan, Brittany Gibson, Jamie Hockaday, Lauren Saller and Shaundee Woosley were honored prior to Friday's games. The Class of 2014 ends their careers with 101 wins. The Lions set new marks in walks (174), home runs (48), doubles (85), RBIs (271), runs scored (291), total bases (649), team batting average (.323) slugging percentage (.509) and on base percentage (.411).
