Mars Hill Completes Sweep of Young Harris
The Mars Hill softball team swept a pair of games from Young Harris, earning a 6-3 win in game one and a dramatic, come-from-behind 10-9 victory in game two. Mars Hill has swept all three home doubleheaders this season.

Game 1: Mars Hill 6, Young Harris 3
Mars Hill scored five runs in the fifth inning to power past the visiting Lions in game one.
Young Harris got on the board in the first inning as Sydnee Weaver reached on a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a Lyndsey York single.
Mars Hill stranded six runners in the first four innings before stringing together a big inning in the fifth. Brittany Gibson reached on a one out double and scored on a Jamie Hockaday single. Jamie Booze brought home Hockaday with a base hit, with Aleshia Peek bringing home a pair of runs on a single. Kyara Porche brought home two runners on a two out double to give Mars Hill a five run inning.
Young Harris got a pair of runs back on a Chandler Stooksbury two-run home run to cut the Mars Hill lead to 5-3. Mars Hill added an insurance run in the sixth as Gibson led off with a double and scored on a Hockaday single. Young Harris managed a one out hit in the ninth, but a pair of flyouts to left field ended the game.
Gibson went three-for-three with two runs scored to lead the Mars Hill offense. Cori Dew went three-for-four with two singles, a double, and run scored, while Peek went three-for-four with three singles, an RBI and run scored. Hockaday went two-for-four with two singles, two RBIs and a run scored. Porche went one-for-three with a double and two RBIs. Shaundee Woosley and Booze also had hits for Mars Hill.
Shelby Culler earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Taylor Hussey started the contest, allowing one run with a walk and strikeout in two innings.
Game 2: Mars Hill 10, Young Harris 9
Aleshia Peek's walkoff grand slam with two outs capped a four-run seventh inning as Mars Hill came back to defeat Young Harris 10-9.
Young Harris scored three runs in the first inning on a single by Sarah Magill and a two-run double by Stacia Williams. Mars Hill got two of the runs back on Robyn Stanek's two-run home run.
In the Young Harris third inning, a single by Lindsay Tudor and three-run home run from Taylor Beauchamp put the visitors ahead 7-2. Mars Hill cut the lead to 7-4 thanks to a Jamie Hockaday two-run home run. Young Harris got the runs back in their next at-bat thanks to an RBI single by Chandler Stooksbury and a groundout. Mars Hill answered in the fifth with RBI singles from Cori Dew and Jamie Booze.
Mars Hill began the seventh inning with a groundout and strikeout, followed by a Hockaday free pass, followed by Dew being hit by a pitch and a walk to Booze. Peek emphatically ended the game with a grand slam to right-center field for Mars Hill's 11th victory of 2014.
Peek went two-for-four with a single, home run, run scored and four RBIs. Hockaday went one-for-one with a home run, two walks and three runs scored. Stanek went one-for-two with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Dew, Booze, Brittany Gibson and Shaundee Woosley also had hits for Mars Hill.
Allie Carrigan earned her second victory of the season, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in 4.2 innings of work.
Brittany Olsen was charged with the loss after she allowed two runs on one hit with a walk without recording a batter. Young Harris starter Brittany Henry allowed eight runs on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Mars Hill travels to mountain rival Lees-McRae on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
