Pirates Sink Mars Hill
The Armstrong softball team scored nine runs over their final two at-bats to defeat Mars Hill 13-6 on Sunday afternoon at the Armstrong Tournament.
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong softball team scored nine runs over their final two at-bats to defeat Mars Hill 13-6 on Sunday afternoon at the Armstrong Tournament. With the loss, Mars Hill's season record is even at 4-4.
Armstrong got on the board in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run by Lacye Walker. Mars Hill took the lead with a four-run third inning. Aleshia Peek brought home Brittany Gibson on a bases-loaded walk before Dew cleared the bases with a three-run triple.
The Pirates tied the game at four via a Haley Ellis two-run home run in the fourth. Dew answered for Mars Hill, driving home Robyn Stanek and Peek with a two-run double to give the Lions a 6-4 lead in the fifth. Armstrong answered with five runs in the home half of the frame before adding four more in the sixth. Mars Hill had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh after a Jamie Hockaday double and a walk to Jamie Booze, but Ollivia McLemore got the final two outs to end the game. Of Armstrong's 13 runs, 11 were scored on five home runs.
Dew went two-for-four with a double, triple and five RBIs. Dew is the 13th player in school history to have five RBIs in a game. Peek, Hockaday, Jamie Booze, Taylor Burkhalter and Shaundee Woosley each had a hit for the Lions.
Taylor Hussey is charged with the loss after she allowed nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits in 4.1 innings. Allie Carrigan allowed four runs, three earned, on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in her first outing of the season. McLemore picked up her sixth victory of the year for Armstrong,
Mars Hill travels to Milligan on Tuesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
