Davis sets career-high on road at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (8-16, 3-11 SAC) was defeated by Newberry (16-8, 9-5 SAC) by a score of 73-64.
After a back-and-forth affair in the first half, the Lions carried a 34-32 lead into the half. They hit 41 percent of their shots from the floor and leading the way was Kory Davis, converting 11 of his 12 free throw attempts and leading all players with 13 points. Prosper Obidiebube added eight points off the bench and pulled down a team-high four rebounds.
Quandaveon McCollum led the Wolves with 13 points of his own in the first, hitting 6-of-9 shots and pulled down six rebounds to lead all players after 20 minutes of play.
Newberry would tie the game at 40-all with 14:21 remaining before going on a 6-0 run to pull away from Mars Hill. They'd go on to lead by as many as eight midway through the half.
Mars Hill began their comeback bid with less than six minutes to play, trailing by seven. A 6-1 run saw the team pull within two, but following a Lions' timeout, Newberry responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, one they would not relinquish.
Davis led all players in the half with 15 and all players on the night with a career-high 28 points. Isaiah Jones netted 17 points, going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
McCollum led the Wolves with 26 points and collected 11 rebounds for the double-double. Caleb Byrd added 12 points off the bench.
The Lions return home on Wednesday, February 15 when they host Catawba. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.
