Lions split season series with Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-10, 1-10 SAC) was defeated by Queens (1-7, 1-6 SAC) by a score of 74-60 on the road Saturday afternoon.
Queens used a massive fourth quarter to complete the comeback and gain their first victory of the season. With under seven minutes to play, Amari Davis tied the game at 52 and a Taylor Stevens' three-pointer with 6:21 left gave Queens a lead they would not relinquish.
Queens began to pull away with under two minutes to play, closing out the contest on a 7-0 run to secure the victory. The Royals shot 69% from the floor, outscoring the Lions 31-12. Stevens scored 13 points in the frame to lead all players.
The Lions closed out the first quarter up by three, 15-12. De'Ja Marshall went 4-of-5 from the floor, recording 12 of the Lions' 15 points while pulling down three rebounds. Stevens and Deng each scored four points apiece to lead the Royals' offense.
In an evenly played second quarter, the Lions were outscored 14-13, but maintained the two-point advantage going into halftime. Drew McMillan led all players in the second quarter with six points, going 3-of-5 from the floor. Kalaya Hall paced the Queens' roster with five points.
The Lions carried a balanced offensive attack in the third, outscoring the Royals 20-17. Gabby Gianikos led all players with six points while Selby Baughman and Trinity Barkley added four apiece. Hall led the Royals with eight points.
Stevens and Hall led all players with 20 points apiece while Christina Deng recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, 11 offensively. Marshall led the Lions with 18 points followed by Gianikos' 14 on the day.
The Lions return home on Saturday, February 6 when they host Wingate. Tipoff inside Chambers Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
