Gianikos sets career-high versus UVA Wise

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-16, 2-16 SAC) was defeated Monday night versus UVA Wise (13-4, 11-4 SAC) by a score of 81-68.
The Cavaliers took an 11-4 lead just under four minutes into the game with Nia Vanzant recording four points during the run. A Gabby Gianikos three-pointer cut the deficit down to four, however UVA Wise responded with a 6-2 run to further their lead. With under 30 seconds left in the first quarter, Hannah Chandler hit both free throw opportunities to send the Lions into the second trailing 17-11.
With 3:04 remaining in the half, Ada Stanely hit a three-pointer that saw the Cavaliers build their largest lead at the time, 34-19. Stanley led all players with 14 points in the half, including 10 in the second quarter. De'Ja Marshall netted 10 points in the half to lead the Lions.
Gianikos dominated in the third quarter, recording 13 of her game-high 24 points, going 4-of-6 from the floor and hitting all four free throw attempts. She was responsible for 13 of the Lions' 17 points in the frame. Caitlyn Ross led the Cavaliers with nine points, going 4-of-5 from the floor.
The fourth quarter saw the teams combine for 53 points with the Lions recording 28. The Lions trailed 73-55 with 3:22 remaining before going on an 11-3 run. Marshall was instrumental, collecting two rebounds, two points, one steal, and one assist in the span. Chandler hit the last five points of the run, including a three-pointer to close the deficit to 10. Marshall scored eight points while Chandler added seven.
Peyton Sams quelled the Lions' momentum with a corner three-pointer to reestablish the 13-point lead.
Gianikos netted 24 to establish a new career-high. Marshall ended the contest with 18 points and 12 rebounds while adding three assists and three steals. Chandler recorded 11 points and six rebounds.
Ross led the Cavaliers with 18 points followed by Stanley's 16. Hanna Oliver added 12, hitting four three-pointers.
The Lions wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, February 24 when they take on Limestone. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
