Seniors recognized in regular season finale versus Limestone

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-17, 2-17 SAC) closed out the 2020-21 regular season Wednesday night versus Limestone (7-7, 7-6 SAC) by a score of 83-72.
The Lions made a late charge in the fourth quarter, trailing 72-55. Mars Hill, led off with a De'Ja Marshall layup, went on a 13-0 run to close the gap to six points with 4:04 left to play. Marshall was responsible for 12 of the points.
Limestone's Quin Byrd responded by scoring the next five points while Vonshayla Webb added a jumper to close out a 7-0 run to rebuild their double-digit lead and quell the Lions' momentum.
The Lions outshot the Saints 43.3 percent to 37.2 percent, however, Limestone hit 13 three-pointers to Mars Hill's four.
The Saints opened the contest on a 9-2 run and outscored the Lions 15-9 in the opening stanza. Byrd led all players with eight points.
In the highest scoring quarter of the contest, the teams combined for 52 points. Reagan Kargo went 3-of-3 from the floor to lead all players with nine points. Marshall led the Lions with seven points followed by Gabby Gianikos' five.
Byrd netted eight points in each of the first three quarters to amass 24 points. The duo of Gianikos and Marshall scored six apiece in the third while Drew McMillan added five off the bench.
Byrd led all players with 33 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and added six assists. Webb collected the double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Marshall led the Lions with 31 points and 16 rebounds, adding four steals. Gianikos scored 13, collected five rebounds, and assisted on five baskets.
Prior to the contest, seniors Gabby Gianikos, Selby Baughman, and Marissa Jones were recognized for their contributions to the women's basketball program.
Mars Hill clinched the No. 12 seed in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament and will face the No. 5 Anderson Trojans on Saturday, February 27. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
