Marshall collects 10th double-double versus Wingate
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (1-1) defeated Southern Wesleyan (0-2) by a score of 15-5 Monday night for their first win of the 2021 season.
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-14, 2-14 SAC) fell to Wingate (8-8, 7-7 SAC) by a score of 87-65 Monday night on the road.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-3 lead after three minutes of play. Mars Hill battled throughout the first frame to narrow the deficit to four, 17-13, as Kyla Daniels converted on both of her free throw opportunities. However, the Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 run to close out the frame up by eight.
Wingate pushed their lead up to as many as 19 with just over a minute remaining in the half as Jaia Wilson hit a three for her seventh point of the half. She and Peyton Davis netted six apiece for the Bulldogs in the second stanza while De'Ja Marshall led all players with seven in the frame.
In the most tightly contested quarter, Wingate outscored Mars Hill 24-22. Gabby Gianikos led the Lions with six points while Davis paced the Wingate offense, also with six points. Daniels added five while Marshall netted four.
Marshall pulled down three rebounds in the final quarter, collecting her 10th double-double of the season. The trio of Gianikos, Drew McMillan, and Hannah Chandler each recorded three points in the fourth while Bryanna Troutman led all players with 10 points in the final 10 minutes of play.
Marshall led all players with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Daniels added 14 while Gianikos closed out the night with 13 and four assists.
Four Wingate starters finished the game in double-digits, highlighted by Troutman and Haleigh Hatfield's 16 apiece. Hatfield collected 13 rebounds while Destiny Coleman added 12 points and 10 rebounds, both collecting double-doubles.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, February 17 when they face Carson-Newman on the road. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
