Martin Leads Women's Soccer to Win at King
Martin's 36 career goals two shy of breaking school's record
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Abby Martin scored two goals as the Mars Hill women's soccer team defeated King, 3-2. The Lions improve to 7-4-2 overall. The Tornados fall to 3-10 overall.
Mars Hill got on the board early when Martin, from Greer, S.C., scored in the fifth minute off an assist from Caitlin Foreman (Ridgecrest, N.C.). The Lions took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Morgan Shelton tied the game for King in the 49th minute, but Alyssa Morris (Forked River, N.J.) gave Mars Hill a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute of the contest. Foreman posted her second assist of the match on the goal.
Martin then provided an insurance goal which turned out to be the eventual game-winner at the 75:01 mark. She got the ball from Nikki Peet (Seffner, Fla.) and beat Abbey Kitts for her 13th goal of the season and 36th of her career, which ranks one behind Jasmine Riley's 37 career goals for the highest mark in school history.
Shelton later provided an assist on a goal by Maggie Lynskey in the 88th minute from a corner kick, but the Lions held on for a one-goal victory.
Corrine Roberts (Fredericka, Del.) earned her first collegiate victory and made five saves for Mars Hill. Becca Sellars (Loveland, Ohio) also saw action for the Lions and posted two saves.
Kitts stopped six shots for King.
Mars Hill will host Belmont Abbey on Wednesday. The game will start at 6:30 p.m.
