Women’s Soccer Falls to Young Harris, 1-0
Five seniors honored before the match
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' women's soccer team lost to Young Harris College in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium, 1-0. Mars Hill fell to 9-6-2 overall while YHC improved to 8-5-1 on the season. The Lions recognized their five senior players before the match. Brittany Downs (Orlando, Fla.), Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.), Caity Murnahan (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), Artavia Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) and Shelby Wilson (Arlington, Vt.) played their last home contest for MHC tonight.
Mika Lopes scored the match winner at the 15:39 mark when she scored on a cross from Rachel Wilkes. MHC out shot Young Harris, 13-4. Corner kicks were even at two apiece. Each team was called off sides once.
Kristin Westerhorstmann (Cary, N.C.) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lions and made three saves. Gabby Smith also played the entire match in the net for YHC and made four saves.
Mars Hill's next match will be in the SAC Tournament. The event
begins on November 2. The higher seed in the bracket will host the
quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals will be held at Manchester
Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. on November 5 and 7, respectively.
