Women’s Soccer Runs Past Tornados
Martin Records Hat Trick in Win
MARS HILL, N.C - Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.) recorded a hat trick as the Lions' women's soccer team defeated SAC rival Brevard College, 6-2, Friday night at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 5-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the SAC. The Tornadoes fell to 3-6-1 on the season, 1-2 in the league.
The Lions first score came from an own goal by the Tornados just 32 seconds into the match. Alyssa Morris (Forked River, N.J.) gave MHC the lead for good at the 8:07 mark when she scored from 15 yards out. The teams carried that scored into the locker room at the intermission.
Her goal was assisted by Leah Taylor (Baltimore, Md.). Martin scored her first goal in the match at the 50:59 mark on a through ball by Shelby Wilson (Arlington, Vt.). Martin's second score came five minutes later (52:46) off a pass from Morris to give MHC a 4-0 advantage. Martin then recorded her final goal three minutes later (57:36) after her second score. The ball was passed by Taylor. Taylor and Martin struck again at the 60:28 mark to end the Lions scoring. Martin passed the ball ahead to Taylor who beat the Tornados defenders on a breakaway and give MHC a 6-0 lead.
Elena Crowe (Candler, N.C.) scored the Tornadoes first goal at the 63:52 mark off a corner kick sent in by Allie Hovis (Charlotte, N.C.). Hovis later scored in the 71st minute from 20 yards out to make the final tally, 6-2. The goal was assisted by Rachael Laughlin (Chesapeake, Va.).
MHC out shot the Tornadoes, 18-8. The Lions edged Brevard in corner kicks, 5-4. MHC was called off sides four times as opposed to three by the Tornadoes. Chelsea Parker (Richmond, Va.) played all 90 minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made four saves. Brittany Webster (Stafford, Va) played the first half in goal for BC and made four saves. Crissy Moran (Franklin County, Va.) played the second half in the net for Brevard and made two saves.
MHC will host Erskine on October 4. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
