Martinsen scores twice in contest against Lenoir-Rhyne
The Mars Hill women’s soccer team (1-6-0, 0-2 SAC) were defeated 4-2 by Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2-1, 1-1 SAC) Wednesday evening in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-6-0, 0-2 SAC) were defeated 4-2 by Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2-1, 1-1 SAC) Wednesday evening in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Lenoir-Rhyne took an early 1-0 lead when Abigael McGarel drew a penalty inside the box and earned a penalty kick. She slid the ball low, under the left arm of the diving Lions' goalkeeper Tonje Jorgensen for her first of the season.
Less than a minute later, from over 20 yards out, Sanne Martinsen scored her third of the season to tie the game at one. The goal, that beat Loren Sterling low inside the right post, was assisted on by Alyssa Deno for her first point of the season.
Martinsen would score her second of the contest and fourth in the game just over seven minutes into the second half to put the Lions up 2-1 as she put back a rebound off of a corner kick.
The Lion lead would last for seven minutes before Claire Neibergall booted in the ball behind Clare Witt from a corner kick taken by Abbie Brown. Brown would assist on the Bears next goal with just under 12 minutes left in the game, once again a corner kick put in behind Witt. Taylor Rios had the goal.
Brown added an insurance tally with less than four minutes left when she struck home a free kick from over 20 yards out.
Sterling made one save on the three shots she faced for the win. Witt suffered the loss, allowing three goals on five shots. Jorgensen made three saves in the first half.
Mars Hill heads to Anderson on Saturday, September 22 to take on the Trojans in South Atlantic Conference action. The game is set to start at 5 p.m.
