Mars Hill loses thriller against Newberry
The Mars Hill women’s soccer team (3-11-0, 2-7-0 SAC) fell by a score of 3-2 to Newberry (7-7-1, 2-6-1 SAC) Wednesday evening inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's soccer team (3-11-0, 2-7-0 SAC) fell by a score of 3-2 to Newberry (7-7-1, 2-6-1 SAC) Wednesday evening inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Emma Harms led the Wolves with a goal and two assists in the contest. She provided Newberry the 2-1 lead just seven minutes into the second half, smashing a ball off the crossbar and down for her fourth goal of the season. She then picked up her second assist of the contest on the game-winning marker by Daphne Heyaime with less than eight minutes remaining.
In between the Wolves' two second half goals was the then game-tying goal from Mars Hill's Natasha Castellano. After bouncing past a Newberry defender, Castellano lofted the ball from 15 yards out inside the far left post to tie the game at two in the 61st minute.
Mars Hill struck first, fifteen minutes into the contest. Taking a free kick from 30 yards out, Leah Hairfield scored her first of the season, tucking the ball inside the near right post to take a 1-0 lead.
Heyaime tied the game with less than seven minutes remaining in the half off of her second on the year. Capitalizing off of a rebound, Heyaime rolled the ball past the sprawled out Mars Hill goalkeeper to knot the game at one heading into halftime.
The Lions conclude their 2018 season on Saturday, October 27th at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium with a 1 p.m. contest against Queens. The seniors of the team will be honored prior to the start of the match in recognition of Senior Day.
