GREENVILLE, S.C. - Senior Jessica Viscusi captured a runner-up finish in the Division II, III and NAIA portion of Furman Invitational held on Saturday morning. As a team, the Lions finished in 14th place overall and sixth among NCAA Division II schools.
Viscusi completed the 6 kilometer course in 22 minutes, 47 seconds. It is Viscusi's second top two finish of the season, as the 2013 NCAA Division II national qualifier was the victor in the Catawba Invitational last Friday. She was the highest finishing Southeast region and South Atlantic Conference runner.
"This race was a great improvement from last week," Viscusi said. "The distance today was the 6K which is the regional and national championship race length. Many had personal bests at the 5K mark even while jumping over logs and hay. The work ethic of the women on our team is unstoppable and I cannot wait to see how we continue to do throughout the season."
Faith Trammell finished in 16th place, crossing the line in 23:43.48. Trammell was the third-highest finishing SAC runner. Megan Smith took home a 56th place finish (25:30.61), with Shelby Robinson (26:00.61) and Anje Kidd (26:01.90) crossing the line in 67th and 68th. Savannah Hulbert (26:16.46) and Kierstyn Horton (27:16.55) rounded out the scoring positions for the Lions. Other Mars Hill finishers were Bianca Pereira, Andrea Wolfrey, Carey Shields, Leah Wilson, Danielle Dunn, Abbey Nichols, Cynthia Griffin and Jeri Martin.
Samantha Jones of Wake Forest was the overall individual winner in 21:06.65, leading a 1-2 Demon Deacon finish with Catherine Allen. Emory's Tamara Surtees was the Collegiate Division II, III and NAIA winner in 22:20. Emory was the team winner, finishing with 36 points. Wake Forest finished in second place with 45 points, followed by host Furman with 56.
