Mars Hill rolls past Newberry
Lions' defense frustrates Wolves into 31 turnovers in sixth win of season.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (6-3, 3-2 SAC) defeated Newberry (3-6, 2-3 SAC) by a score of 72-55 Wednesday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Lions started the contest off hot with a 9-0 run. Newberry battled through the first quarter, ultimately carrying an 18-17 lead into the second. Both teams added 13 points apiece in the second to send the Wolves into the half up 31-30.
Mars Hill held Newberry to just 24 second half points, outscoring the Wolves 42-24 in the final 20 minutes. In the third, Daisy Gale led the Lions with nine points followed by seven from Aaliyah El. The Lions shot nearly 47 percent from the floor and forced eight turnovers.
The Lions' defense continued to dictate play, forcing another nine turnovers in the fourth as they went on to outscore Newberry 22-10. El led all players with 11 points followed by six from Maddie Gillie. Tateyoina Harris led the team with three steals in the quarter.
El led all players with 18 points while Gillie added 14. Gale netted 13 off the bench and led the team with three assists. El also led the team with six rebounds.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, December 7 when they face Coker. Tipoff on the road is set for 2 p.m.
