No. 11 Lee eeks out series win over MHU
The Mars Hill baseball team (1-7) fell to No. 11 Lee (3-4) by a score of 8-7 to wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-7) fell to No. 11 Lee (3-4) by a score of 8-7 to wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
The Flames used a five-run fourth inning to propel themselves to the series win. Trailing 3-0, a Brandon Daniels' solo home run was the catalyst for their run. Luke Hughes' sacrifice fly tied the game at three and Gavin Baxter's RBI single gave the Flames their first lead of the afternoon. Ashton Simmons added a RBI double to build their lead to two runs.
In the top of the fifth, Jordan Lathe pulled the Lions within one with a solo home run over the left field fence. Lee got the run back in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a Mars Hill wild pitch.
Trevor Bailey, in the top of the sixth, tied the game at six with a two-run home run to right field.
In the bottom of the seventh, a pair of RBI singles from Isaac Quinones and Hughes put Lee back up by two late in the game.
Dawson Connell plated Lathe with a RBI single in the top of the ninth, but the comeback bid ultimately fell short for the Lions.
Connell opened the scoring in the top of the first with a RBI triple. Later in the inning, Zach Weaver scored Connell with a double down the left field line. In the top of the fourth, Tyler Sellers scored Weaver with a RBI double to left.
Daniels and Connell led their respective teams with three hits apiece. Hughes led Lee with two RBI while Connell and Bailey each drove in two for the Lions.
Barrett Williams was credited with the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched. Greyson Linderman struck out six while allowing three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings for the win.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Wednesday, February 15 when they take on Erskine. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
