Mars Hill defeated by Shorter
The Mars Hill baseball team (12-37) was defeated by Shorter (24-18) in both games held Friday afternoon by scores of 9-1 and 10-8.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (12-37) was defeated by Shorter (24-18) in both games held Friday afternoon by scores of 9-1 and 10-8.
GAME ONE: SU 9, MHU 1
In the bottom of the second, Dawson Connell tied the game at one with a solo home run over the left field fence.
Shorter went on to score eight unanswered runs, including five in the fourth, all off of home runs. Gavin Millians and Jakob Woods hit solo shots while Jacob Pajer's three-run home run put Shorter up by six.
In the top of the ninth, the Hawks added two runs off of a Logan Stockton home run down the left field line.
Stockton and Pajer led all players with three RBI. They, along with Justin Barnes, led Shorter with two hits. Connell led the Lions with two hits while Jordan Lathe and Luke Hayes each recorded one hit in the contest.
Tanner Folds picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven in 6.0 innings thrown.
GAME TWO: SU 10, MHU 8
The Hawks once again used the long ball to their advantage, completing the Friday sweep in game two.
In the top of the first, Shorter scored four as Thomas Schroeder IV opened the scoring with a solo home run followed by a three-run homer from Gavin Millians later in the frame. In the top of the second, Jacob Pajer hit a two-run homer while Kobe Jones followed with a solo shot.
The Lions clawed into the deficit in the bottom of the second, kicked off by Dawson Connell's solo blast. Following an Alex Naran RBI single, Chapel Matson launched a two-run home run to pull Mars Hill within three.
In the bottom of the third, the Lions scored two to trail just 7-6, but in the top of the fourth, Jones' second solo home run of the game put the Hawks back up by two. Millians added a RBI single in the inning.
Going back-to-back in the bottom of the fourth, Zach Weaver and Chris Bleeker blasted solo home runs to once again pull within one.
In the top of the fifth, a Mars Hill error allowed the Hawks to score an insurance run as Kody Krause crossed home.
Millians led all players with four RBI while Weaver led all players with three hits in the game. Connell and Alex Naran each added two hits for the Lions.
Mars Hill wraps up the season on Saturday, April 22 when they close out the series versus the Hawks. First pitch at Henderson Field on Senior Day Saturday is set for 2 p.m. while the Senior Day festivities are set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
