Mars Hill earns split with Tusculum
The Mars Hill baseball team (6-22, 3-8 SAC) split with Tusculum (18-8, 8-3) Saturday, dropping game one by a score of 8-7, but rallying in game two in extra innings with a 10-9 result.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill baseball team (6-22, 3-8 SAC) split with Tusculum (18-8, 8-3) Saturday, dropping game one by a score of 8-7, but rallying in game two in extra innings with a 10-9 result.
GAME ONE: TU 8, MHU 7
A ninth-inning home run from Zane Keener pushed the Pioneers to victory in game one.
Keener launched a ball down the right field line, barely staying fair to break the 7-7 tie in the ninth.
Tusculum opened the scoring in the top of the second off of a Dylan Symonds' RBI single. The Lions took the lead in the bottom of the third off of Alex Naran's RBI double, going up 2-1. A Tusculum error allowed Tyler Sellers to score later in the frame with the Lions heading into the fourth with a 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers cut the deficit down to one in the fourth with a RBI single from Ben Scartz. They retook the lead in the fifth, plating four runs, highlighted by Symonds' two-run single. Jordan Lathe's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth pulled the Lions within two.
After trading runs in the seventh, Silas Isenhour tied the game at seven with a RBI through the right side, scoring Dawson Connell.
Scartz led Tusculum with four hits while Keener and Symonds each collected three RBI. Lathe led the Lions with four hits while Weaver led the team with two RBI.
Jacob Willett was credited with the win, allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings thrown.
GAME TWO: MHU 10, TU 9 (8 Innings)
Zach Weaver's walkoff blast in the bottom of the eighth helped earn Mars Hill the split, taking game two by a score of 10-9.
In the top of the seventh, Tusculum scored three runs to tie the game at nine, forcing extra innings. Two RBI singles were followed by the tying run scoring off of a Mars Hill error.
The Lions opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth, plating five runs.
Following three straight walks to open the bottom half of the inning, Tyler Sellers' RBI single opened the scoring. With the Lions' next at-bat, Dawson Connell cleared the bases with a grand slam.
The Lions added another two runs in the bottom of the fifth off of a Tusculum error and wild pitch later in the inning. Tusculum pulled within one after scoring six in the top of the sixth, highlighted by Will Samuelson's three-run home run.
Mars Hill regained the three-run advantage in the bottom of the sixth scoring two in the frame off of Jordan Lathe's two-run single that snuck into right field.
Keener led all players with three hits while Samuleson led the Pioneers with three RBI. Weaver led the Lions with two hits while Connell led all players with four RBI.
Jake Wagoner picked up the win, allowing one run on three hits in two innings while striking out three.
The Lions close out the weekend series on Sunday, March 19 with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
