Bailey's walkoff double caps off Senior Day comeback win

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (13-37) capped off their 2023 season with a dramatic walkoff 12-11 win over Shorter (24-19) on Saturday afternoon.
Mars Hill trailed 11-5 entering the bottom of the eighth before scoring seven unanswered runs to complete the come from behind win.
Trevor Bailey kicked off the run with a RBI double followed by a RBI singles from Terick Bumgarner and Jordan Lathe. Zach Weaver's two-run home run capped off a five-run eighth inning, sending the Lions into the ninth trailing 11-10.
Bailey's two-run double in the bottom of the ninth scored Chad Sikes and Donald Gorgei, completing the comeback and snapping an eight-game losing streak.
Shorter jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first half inning, highlighted by Kobe Jones' two-run home run. Mars Hill responded by scoring three in the bottom half with Weaver recording a RBI double followed by a RBI single off the bat of Alex Naran.
The Hawks rebuilt their lead to three, plating two in the top of the third. After three scoreless innings, Mars Hill scored twice in the seventh to pull within one for the second time of the contest with a Lathe RBI double and a RBI single off the bat of Dawson Connell.
Shorter answered back in the top of the eighth, scoring five, highlighted by a two-run double from Justin Barnes.
Jones led the Hawks with two hits and three RBI while Lathe led all players with four hits, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate. Connell and Bailey added three hits apiece while Bailey and Weaver led the team with three RBI.
Tristan Camp threw a scoreless ninth inning, earning the win.
Prior to the start of the game, seniors Jordan Lathe, Dawson Connell, Luke Kimrey, Will Carter, Trevor Bailey, Ian Yunker, Tristan Camp, Connor Presnell, and Sam Kaplan were recognized for their contributions to the baseball progam.
