MHU scores five unanswered, evens series with Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (2-9) defeated Catawba (5-4) by a score of 5-4 Saturday afternoon to even the weekend series.
After Catawba scored two runs apiece in the first and second innings, the Lions trailed 4-0 after four innings of play. In the top of the fifth, a RBI single from Trey Putnam along with a Catawba error cut the lead in half. Putnam was later plated by a RBI double off the bat of Jordan Lathe.
Following scoreless sixth and seventh innings, Lathe recorded his second RBI of the day with a solo home run to left in the top of the eighth to tie the game at four. Two batters later, Zach Weaver launched a solo shot over the left field wall to give the Lions the 5-4 advantage.
A 1-2-3 ninth inning from Sam Kaplan closed out the game and secured the Lions' win.
Logan Rogers led all players with three RBI on the day, going 2-of-5 from plate. Lathe led the Lions with two RBI followed by one apiece from Putnam and Weaver.
Kaplan threw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two for the win. Ross Fowler was credited with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning thrown. Brandon Rodgers allowed two earned runs on four hits in seven innings for Catawba.
The Lions close out the series on Sunday, February 19 at 1 p.m. on the road.
