Mars Hill held off by Flying Fleet
The Mars Hill baseball team (4-17) was defeated by Erskine (13-6) by a score of 4-3 Tuesday afternoon inside Don Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (4-17) was defeated by Erskine (13-6) by a score of 4-3 Tuesday afternoon inside Don Henderson Field.
The Flying Fleet opened the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dale Francis, Jr. In the bottom half of the inning, Dawson Connell's single through the left side plated Jordan Lathe to tie the game at one.
After going down 2-1 in the top of the third, the Lions responded with two runs in the bottom of the stanza. Following a wild pitch that allowed Luke Hayes to score the tying run, Connell scored off a Chapel Matson single to left field.
Erskine tied the game in the top of the fourth off of a single from Tyler Smith. The Flying Fleet took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth as Armando Becerra launched a home run over the right field fence.
Lathe led all players with three hits on the day followed by two apiece from Hayes, Connell, and Matson.
Daniel Vos was credited with the win, striking out three and allowing one hit in 3.1 innings thrown. Will Carter suffered the loss, allowing one run on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched.
The Lions return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 8 when they host King. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
