Lions place four on D2CCA Super Region 2 Football All-Region Teams
Mars Hill University placed three football players on the D2CCA Super Region 2 Football All-Region First Team and one on the Second Team
VALDOSTA, Ga. - The 2021 D2CCA Super Region 2 Football All-Region teams were released on Thursday (Dec. 2). The South Atlantic Conference was well represented as 15 total SAC student-athletes were named to the teams, with nine first team selections and six second team selections.
Mars Hill and Wingate had four selections each, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne with three, Newberry had two, and both Carson-Newman and Catawba had one player each.
On the First Team Offense was senior tight end Ty Snelson. Snelson led the SAC in touchdown receptions with nine and was ninth in the conference in yards per game with 49.5.
Junior linebacker Landon Honeycutt and sophomore defensive back Tristan Rankin were named First Team Defense selections.
Rankin hauled in eight interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. He totaled 40 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and three tackles for loss. He was named the statistical champion in interceptions per game (0.80). Rankin was also named the SAC Defensive Freshman of the Year.
Honeycutt led the SAC in total tackles with 105, nine more than the next closest player. He recorded 5.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss, recovered two fumbles, and pulled down one interception.
On the Second Team Defense, the Lions placed junior linebacker Dexter Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick led the SAC in sacks per game (0.90) and led the league with nine sacks on the year and 12 tackles for loss. He placed fourth in the conference in total tackles with 74.
