Women's Soccer Loses to Shorter in Season Opener
The Lions’ women’s soccer team lost their season opener to Shorter, 2-1 Thursday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. It was the season opener for both teams.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' women's soccer team lost their season opener to Shorter, 2-1 Thursday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. It was the season opener for both teams.
Corrie Thomas put the Hawks on the board at the 6:16 mark scoring from 25 yards out. The goal was unassisted. MHU out shot Shorter 10-8 in the first half. Rachel Weber came close to tying the contest for the Lions in the 38th minute but the shot barely missed wide left.
Weber knotted the match at 1-all at the 57:13 mark on a through ball into a wide open net. The ball was passed by Megan Stabile. Thomas then notched her second goal of the match at the 86:59 mark to score what would prove to be the match winner off a lead pass from Cintia Lamas.
Shorter out shot the Lions 16-14. The Hawks edged the Lions in corner kicks, 3-2. Tori Stajduhar played all 90 minutes in goal for MHU and made eight saves. Alden Powell also played the entire match in the net for Shorter and made seven saves.
Mars Hill will play at King on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
