SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Mars Hill women's soccer team was unable to overcome a 3-0 halftime deficit as the Lions fell to Converse 5-2 on Wednesday night. Converse improves to 1-2 while Mars Hill drops to 0-3.
The Valkyries got on the board 72 seconds into the match as Mariah Elliott scored on a cross from Darby Boyd. At the 11:50 mark, Alex Marquez found the back of the net on a deflection off of Mars Hill goalkeeper Maslyn Greene. Georgia Jones gave Converse a 3-0 lead heading into halftime with an assist from Josie Davis.
Mars Hill answered in the second half as Hannah Russell scored her second goal of the year at the 46:30 mark after a cross from Rachel Blong. Breona Tate scored her team-leading third goal of the year at 67:57 with an assist from Haley Stewart to pull the Lions within a goal. Converse would answer with goals by Claudia Coffin at 78:21 and Natalie Johnson at 79:24 for a 5-3 victory.
Josee Waitrovich made six saves on eight shots for the hosts. Greene made two saves while Shelby Savolainen made four saves in her Mars Hill debut.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, hosting Lees-McRae at 2 p.m.
