Lions kickoff season on road versus Bobcats

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (0-1) dropped their season-opening contest versus Lees-McRae (1-0) Thursday evening on the road by a score of 2-1.
A scoreless first half saw Lees-McRae outshoot the Lions 8-2. Taylor Barrineau opened the scoring in the 58th minute. Just over a minute later, Alexa Todd doubled the score, putting the Bobcats up 2-0 with under 31 minutes to play.
With four seconds remaining, an own goal by Lees-McRae cut their lead in half.
Sarah Paiva made eight saves in the loss while Mallory Roughton stopped three shots for the shutout win. Barrineau led all players with four shots on goal.
The Lions take to the road on Saturday, September 4 when they face Mount Olive in Greensboro, North Carolina. The neutral site contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
