Martinsen's late strike pushes Lions past Flying Fleet

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-1-1) downed Erskine (0-2-0) in their home opener, 1-0, Wednesday night inside Meares Stadium.
Sanne Martinsen scored her first goal of the season with under seven minutes to play. Taking a Bailey Whitehead-Price crossing pass from the near sideline, Martinsen slid and angled the ball with her right foot past Kaylie Hayes.
Moments prior to Martinsen's tally, Camryn Miller, defending South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, made a momentum-changing save on Brianna Raffa's breakaway opportunity.
Earlier in the half, the Lions struck the far post twice with shots coming from Carla Humera and Alanna Sheppard. After getting outshot 5-3 in the first half, the Lions roared back in the second, outshooting Erskine 9-1.
Miller made four saves in the opening half of play to keep the Lions in the contest. She stopped five for the win.
Martinsen and Humera led all players with four shot attempts. Martinsen put three on target compared to Humera's two.
The Lions take to the road on Saturday, September 11 when they take on Alabama-Huntsville. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
