MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (2-4-1) defeated Emory & Henry (4-1-2) by a score of 3-2 Wednesday night inside Meares Stadium.
Sanne Martinsen played hero once again, scoring the game-winning goal with 1:30 remaining in regulation. Carla Humera split between two defenders and dished a pass off to Olivia Wilson on the right-wing. Her crossing pass was lifted above the Wasps' goalkeeper's left shoulder, under the crossbar as Martinsen scored her fourth of the season.
Martinsen opened the scoring in the first, less than 30 seconds played. Kiana Tuckett's area pass was tracked down by the senior from Skarnes, Norway who blasted it in the net from about 25-yards out as Natalie Capone could not cut off the shot in time from outside of the box.
In the ninth minute of play, Grace Williams tied the game for Emory & Henry, lofting a shot just over the hands of the Mars Hill goalkeeper and under the crossbar. Helen Frazier picked up the assist.
Riley Nash netted her first of the season in the 27th minute, putting home a rebound off of a Humera shot. The ball deflected off the left post and to the right foot of Nash who gave the Lions the 2-1 lead entering the half.
Callie McMurray, in the 61st minute, replicated Nash's effort, capitalizing on a loose ball inside the Mars Hill box and tying the game at two.
Mars Hill outshot the Wasps 21-2 with 10 shots going on target. Martinsen led all players with six attempts, three on target. Humera, Nash, and Isabella Busenbark each added three shot attempts and combined for four on target.
Victoria Forren earned the win in her season debut while Capone made seven saves in the losing effort.
Mars Hill returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 25 when they host Queens in South Atlantic Conference action. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
