Mars Hill opens season on road at Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD, W.V. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (0-1) opened their 2022-23 season on the road versus Bluefield State (1-0), falling by a score of 83-58.
The Big Blue carried a five-point advantage into the second quarter, outscoring the Lions 22-17. They were led offensively by Essence Cowan who netted nine points in the frame. The Lions were led by Janette Hanni, who scored four, and the trio of Jo Snow, Hannah Barr, and Ariel Lucas added three apiece.
Bluefield State's Aerihna Afoa scored a quarter-high seven, leading the Big Blue to 40-28 lead heading into the half. The Big Blue shot 50 percent from the floor in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 26-11 with Cowan netting 14 points.
Snow led all players in the fourth, scoring nine points while Lucas and Naja Ngongba added five points apiece.
Bluefield State shot over 44 percent from the floor and hit 15 three-pointers with Cowan leading all players with 26 points, 24 from beyond the arc. Snow led Mars Hill with 19 points followed by Lucas and Ngongba with 11 aside.
The Lions open their home slate on Wednesday, November 16 when they host Belmont Abbey. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
