Lions down Belmont Abbey in home opener

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-1) defeated Belmont Abbey (0-1) by a score of 69-59 in their home opener Wednesday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The teams ended the first tied at 19 as Cate Schieber led all players with nine points. Maddie Gillie led the Lions with seven followed by Janette Hanni's six.
Two points separated the team at the half as the Crusaders led 35-33 after 20 minutes of play. Mars Hill turned up the pressure in the third quarter, outscoring Belmont Abbey 17-14 as Hanni scored seven in the frame to lead all players.
The Lions shot 50 percent from the floor and drained two of their three three-pointers with Hanni and Jo Snow converting.
Belmont Abbey shot just 33 percent from the floor in the final frame, going 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. Snow led the Lions with 12 points in the frame, hitting nine of 10 free throw attempts to seal the Lions first win of the season.
Zanah Boyd led all players with 20 points and added five rebounds, shooting 10-of-12 from the floor. Gillie and Hanni added 16 apiece while Snow added 15 for Mars Hill.
The team shot just over 41 percent from the floor and hit seven threes on the night. They outrebounded the Crusaders 38-28 with Snow collecting a game-high 11 to complete the double-double.
The Lions return to the court on Saturday, November 19 when they face North Greenville on the road. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
