Lions open 2023 slate on road at Emory & Henry

MEADOWVIEW, Va. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (3-8, 0-4 SAC) was defeated by Emory & Henry (6-7, 3-2 SAC) by a score of 95-68 Wednesday evening on the road.
The Wasps led by four entering the half, but their offense took over in the second half, dropping 30 points in both the third and fourth quarters to pull away big in the final 20 minutes of action. In the third quarter, they shot 65 percent from the floor and were led by Hannah Spainhour's 12 points. Janette Hanni led the Lions with 11 points in the frame.
Breanna Yarber netted 13 in the fourth for Emory & Henry as the team once again shot over 60 percent from the floor. Hannah Barr posted 11 points for Mars Hill to lead the team.
In the opening quarter, the Wasps outscored Mars Hill 23-19 with Emma Santoro and Hanni leading all players with seven points. The second quarter saw both teams score just 12 points apiece in the lowest scoring frame.
Yarber led all players with 27 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Spainhour ended the night with 24 points.
Hanni led the Lions with 22 points followed by Barr's 16 on the night. Maddie Gillie added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, January 7 when they take on Tusculum on the road. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
