Mars Hill clips Eagles' wings in upset win
The Mars Hill women's basketball team (7-14, 3-10 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (14-8, 9-3 SAC) by a score of 69-64 Wednesday evening inside Chambers Gymnasium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (7-14, 3-10 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (14-8, 9-3 SAC) by a score of 69-64 Wednesday evening inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Carson-Newman led 21-19 after the first 10 minutes of play. Braelyn Wykle led the Eagles with eight points. Jo Snow matched the output for Mars Hill along with Janette Hanni, each dropping eight in the frame.
The Lions clawed their way to a 20-16 advantage in the second, entering the half up 39-37. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor with the Eagles clicking at 54 percent. Wykle added an additional eight points, closing out the half with 16 points.
Snow led the Lions with six points while Ana Baptista added five, going 2-for-2 from the floor.
Mars Hill extended their lead to five at the end of the third, outscoring Carson-Newman 14-11 in the penultimate frame. A balanced scoring attack was led by Naja Ngongba and Maddie Gillie, each netting four points while Baptista and Hanni added three apiece.
Both teams recorded 16 points apiece in the fourth with the Lions holding on for their third straight win. Wykle recorded her third quarter with eight points to lead the Eagles. Hanni led Mars Hill with eight points in the frame, sealing the win by hitting all four of her foul shots in the frame.
Wykle led all players with 31 points, hitting 7-of-10 three-pointers.
The Lions were led by Hanni's 22 points and Snow's 14 on the night. Gillie added 13 points and seven rebounds while Baptista went 4-of-6 from the floor, hitting two threes for 11 points off the bench. Ngongba scored eight and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The win marks the first three-game win streak since the 2015-16 season.
Mars Hill takes on Newberry on the road on Saturday, February 11. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
