Ngongba collects double-double against Cavaliers

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team (3-10, 0-6 SAC) was defeated by UVA Wise (11-5, 3-3 SAC) by a score of 75-55 Wednesday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The first half saw the Cavaliers lead 36-33 after a tightly contested 20 minutes of play. In the first quarter, Maddie Gillie led all players, hitting all three three-point attempts for nine points. The Cavaliers shot 64 percent from the floor and were led by Katlin Burger's five points.
The Cavaliers outscored the Lions 16-12 in the second frame to pull ahead before entering the half. Janette Hanni led all players with three assists while Burger and Josie Hester led all players with four points apiece.
Burger continued to carry the UVA Wise offense, posting eight points in the third quarter to lead all players. Naja Ngongba led the Lions with seven followed by four from Hanni.
UVA Wise put greater separation between themselves and the Lions in the fourth, outscoring Mars Hill 22-8. Burger and Hester each netted six points apiece while Caitlyn Ross collected six assists.
The Cavaliers shot just under 49 percent from the floor as Burger led all players with 23 points on the night. Nia Vanzant added 15 while Hester ended the night with 13 to her name. Burger added 11 points for the double-double while Ross led all players with 12 assists.
Gillie led the Lions with 15 points followed by Ngongba's 14 on the evening. Ngongba added a team-high 11 rebounds for the double-double. Hanni netted 12 and added six rebounds and four assists.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, January 14 when they take on Limestone on the road. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
