Mars Hill opens 2023 season on road at C-N
The Mars Hill baseball team (0-1) opened up their 2023 season on the road against Carson-Newman (1-0), falling by a score of 14-7.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill baseball team (0-1) opened up their 2023 season on the road against Carson-Newman (1-0), falling by a score of 14-7.
Zach Weaver opened the scoring in the top of the second, blasting his first home run of the season. The Eagles would respond in the bottom of the frame, scoring four with a solo home run from Zach Boze and RBI singles from William Gibbs and Ben Willcoxon.
Ryan Potts extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third with another RBI single.
The Lions, trailing 8-2, scored three in the top of the sixth, highlighted by Dawson Connell's RBI double that scored Alex Naran. Connell later scored off of a Trevor Bailey RBI single.
Following a Mitchell Balint solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, Mars Hill responded with two in the top of the seventh, pulling within two. Weaver picked up his second RBI of contest with a single that scored Chad Sikes.
Carson-Newman closed out the contest scoring five unanswered, highlighted by Boze's second home run of the game, a three-run blast to left center field in the bottom of the seventh.
Five Eagles recorded two hits on the day as Boze led all players with four RBI. Weaver and Jordan Lathe led all players with three hits apiece.
Mason Mooney threw four innings, allowing two runs on three hits for the win. Jake Wagoner suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs off of five hits in two innings.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Friday, February 3 when they travel to North Georgia. Game one of the three-game series is set for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
