Mars Hill downs King in non-conference play

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (5-17) defeated King (8-8) by a score of 9-6 Wednesday afternoon.
Tied at five entering the bottom of the fourth, the Lions retook the lead with a RBI double off the bat of Luke Hayes, scoring Preston Holcomb and advancing Chad Sikes to third. Sikes later scored off of a sacrifice fly from Jordan Lathe which would prove to be the game-winning run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Donald Gorgei plated Dawson Connell with a RBI single to left and in the bottom of the sixth, Lathe collected his second RBI of the game with a single to left, scoring Hayes and bumping the lead up to 9-5.
Preston Steele narrowed the deficit in the eight by one with a solo home run to left.
Connell opened the scoring for the Lions with a two-run triple in the bottom of the first, scoring Hayes and Chapel Matson. In the bottom of the third, the Lions extended their lead to five with Zach Weaver's two-run double later followed by Connell's sacrifice fly.
The Tornado tied the game in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs in the stanza. Stelle, Derek Martin, and Ethan Hawkins all recorded RBI singles.
Hayes led the Lions with three hits while Connell led all players with three RBI. the trio of Lathe, Weaver, and Connell all recorded two hits apiece.
Colin McCaw earned his second win of the season, allowing four hits in 3.1 while striking out one.
Mars Hill returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, March 10 when they face Newberry on the road. Game one of the three-game weekend series is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
