Mars Hill opens home slate versus Young Harris
The Mars Hill baseball team (0-5) fell to Young Harris (4-0) by a score of 16-5 in their 2023 home opener Tuesday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (0-5) fell to Young Harris (4-0) by a score of 16-5 in their 2023 home opener Tuesday afternoon.
Tied at one entering the second, Young Harris plated two runs to go up 3-1. Jordan Lathe, with his second double of the contest, plated Chad Sikes in the bottom of the second to pull within one.
Young Harris tacked on three more runs in the top of the third highlighted by two RBI singles from Steven Spell and Marco Colina.
Chapel Matson's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth clawed the Lions to within two, but Young Harris would go on to score six runs over the top of the fifth and sixth innings to lead 12-4 heading into the seventh.
Zach Weaver launched a home run in the bottom of the seventh, his second of the season. In the top of the eighth, Drew Bray responded with a two-run shot. The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the top of the ninth to remain unbeaten on the year.
Spell went 2-for-3 on the day, scoring three runs and driving in three. Colina led all players with four RBI. Lathe led the Lions, going 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Alex Naran added two hits on the day.
Ryan Heishman allowed two runs on 2.2 innings for the win. Jake Wagoner allowed six runs on four hits in 3.1 innings pitched while striking out five in the loss.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Saturday, February 11 when they take on Lee. The doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
