Lacrosse Wins Season Opener
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lions' lacrosse team won their season opener over DSC rival Rollins College, 11-5, Thursday night at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. It was new head coach Dave Klarmann's first win at the helm.
T.J. Cowx led Mars Hill with two goals and the same number of assists. Taylor Thilo and Dan Applebaum also recorded two goals in the win. Dylan Price played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made nine saves. Mars Hill outshot the Tars, 37-23 and won the ground ball battle, 38-27.MHC edged Rollins in face-offs, 10-9. The Tars were 1-5 on extra man opportunities while the Lions were 0-4.
James Libutti led Rollins with two goals. Andrew Sheerin played the entire game in the net for the Tars and made 13 saves.
The first quarter was closely played as the Lions enjoyed a 3-2 lead after the first frame. MHC won the second period 4-1 to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room at the intermission. Applebaum notched the game winner on a unassisted goal at the 6:01 mark of the second quarter.
The third quarter saw the teams deadlocked with a 2-2 tie heading into the last quarter. The Lions' defense held strong in the fourth stanza holding the Tars scoreless. Mars Hill's offense posted two insurance goals in the period to make the final tally, 11-5, in favor of the hosts.
MHC will play at Lees-McRae College on February 14. Game time is set for a 4 p.m. start.
