Baseball Wins at Limestone
The Lions’ baseball team beat Limestone, 10-7 on the road Wednesday afternoon at Founders FCU Stadium.
GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Lions' baseball team beat Limestone, 10-7 on the road Wednesday afternoon at Founders FCU Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 2-8 overall while the Saints fell to 4-13 on the season. The teams combined for 26 hits in the contest.
Nick Villalobos led the Lions going 2-4 with three RBI, a run scored and a double. Tommy Scala went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored, the same number of RBI and three stolen bases. Lance Edwards was 2-5 with a homerun, two runs scored and a couple of RBI. Alec Bivens picked up the win (1-0) on the mound for MHU pitching three innings in relief. He allowed no earned runs.
Chris Scura led the Saints going 2-5 at the plate with a homerun, three RBI and two runs scored. Dan Smith followed going 2-4 with a homerun, two RBI while also crossing the plate twice. Ryan Cliff suffered the loss (1-2) on the mound for the Saints throwing five innings allowing six runs and the same number of hits.
Evan Rogers scored on a fielder's choice in the Lions' first at-bat to give MHU an early 1-0 lead. Limestone scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to lead 2-1 before Edwards gave the Lions the lead for good in the fifth frame hitting a two-run homerun to left-center field.
Mars Hill tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth inning on four hits to lead 7-2. Villalobos and Scala accounted for the runs. Villalobos had a two-RBI double while Scala hit a two-RBI single in the at-bat.
After the Lions plated a single run in the top of the seventh inning, Limestone scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning on four hits and one Lion miscue to close their deficit to 8-5. Mars Hill answered scoring in their final two at-bats to seal the win. Rogers had an RBI single in the eighth inning e and then Scala crossed the plate on a throwing error in the ninth.
The Saints made a late run at the Lions in the bottom of the ninth inning when Smith hit s a two-run shot to left field. Zac Brown was able to pitch into a game ending double play to make the final tally 10-7 in favor of the visitors.
Mars Hill will travel to SAC rival Brevard College on Friday for a three-game SAC series. The teams will play a single game on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. The teams will then complete the series with a double-header on Saturday beginning at noon.
